Affliction - Banned
The Cold War might be over, but old rivalries die hard. On July 19th at Honda Center in Anaheim, California, two of the world’s greatest MMA super powers will collide when Russia’s Fedor Emelianenko faces off with America’s Tim Sylvia for the WAMMA heavyweight championship.
These two formidable heavyweight champions finally make it into the ring together, in an event as impressive as the two athletes heading the bill — “Affliction Banned.” These two heavy hitters are so accomplished it’s a challenge for them to find competitive opponents. The two are almost perfectly matched in number of professional bouts they’ve fought in, with Sylvia compiling 24 wins and only 4 losses, and Fedor recording 28 wins and 1 loss. It’s hard to imagine what it will be like in the ring with these two monsters of MMA go head-to-head.
Fedor is a powerful, intelligent fighter and technician who doesn’t outwardly show much emotion, but fights (and trains) with a lot of heart. This astounding fighter never retreats, has great takedown and ground control skills, and is the most devastating fighter that MMA has ever seen when he’s on the inside. And Fedor hits very hard, with amazing knockout power in both hands. Unlike most fighters, Fedor is also a master game planner who follows through on the plan, and simply doesn't wilt under pressure, no matter what the circumstances. Fedor’s record is impeccable, losing only once when a referee decided to end a fight early when he sustained a bad cut from an elbow. All in all, Fedor seems virtually unbeatable.
Although Fedor is the top-ranking heavyweight in the world, there’s no doubt that Tim Sylvia is a force to be reckoned with. With a full 8 inches and 30 pounds over Fedor, Sylvia is a monster with an impressive record, surprisingly quick hands and a long reach that many opponents find hard to escape. His size and striking power, coupled with a rock-em sock-em attitude and stamina are a dangerous combination every time he steps in front of an opponent. Trying to regain the championship title in a fight in 2004, Sylvia wouldn’t tap out when Frank Mir locked him in an armbar, even after his arm was snapped. The ref had to put an end the fight, because Sylvia, broken arm and all wouldn’t give up.
Fedor, who has already proved himself in the ring, is looking to earn a different kind of reputation with the American people. “As far as American fans, I'd like them to get to know me personally…not just as a fighter — as a human being as well." And Sylvia, who has suffered from some criticism and controversy, has a personal, as well as professional, agenda as well — he’s just looking for a little respect. A win against the current world heavyweight champion just might quiet the chatter and earn him the respect he yearns for. In Sylvia’s own words, “It’s time to see if Fedor still has what it takes to be #1.”
On the evening of July 19th at Honda Center in Anaheim, the MMA mega-event of all times —“Affliction Banned”— promises to bear this out.
“Affliction Banned” is stacked with so much world-class talent that it had to be separated into two live shows produced for broadcast. The night’s activities will kick off with “Affliction Live,” a one-hour, free live telecast on FSN (Fox Sports Net) starting at 5 PM Pacific (8 PM/ET) and setting the stage for “Affliction Banned” – five super fights on pay-per-view starting at 6 PM/PT (9 PM/ET) via iN DEMAND, TVN, Shaw Communications, Viewers Choice Canada, DirecTV, DISH Network, Bell ExpressVue and Star Choice in the United States and Canada for a suggested retail price of $39.95.
UFC 84 - Silva Training Hard for Jardine
Wanderlei Silva says he knows the importance of his UFC 84 fight against Keith Jardine on May 24 after losing his last three bouts.
Silva and Jardine meet at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas in a much-anticipated light-heavyweight clash.
Both men enter the bout off the back of fights against the legendary Chuck Liddell, although they enjoyed differing fortunes against the "Iceman".
Silva, the 31-year-old Brazilian, is looking to get his career back on track after dropping a decision to Liddell in their epic, fight-of-the-year clash at UFC 79 in late December.
Meanwhile, Jardine will be fighting for the first time in eight months after his shock split-decision win over Liddell at UFC 76 in September.
While Silva is looking to get back on track after losing his last three fights (one in UFC, two in the final days of PRIDE), Jardine is hoping that a victory will help his continuing claims for a shot at the light-heavyweight title held by Quinton "Rampage" Jackson.

Belcher vs Starnes added to UFC 77 on October 20th
Middleweight prospects Alan “The Talent” Belcher and Kalib Starnes plan on making their case for inclusion among the best at 185 pounds by scoring a victory in their UFC 77 showdown on October 20th at the US Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio.
UFC 77 is headlined by the UFC middleweight title rematch between champion Anderson Silva and challenger Rich Franklin, as well as a heavyweight showdown between former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia and the returning Brandon Vera.
A fierce competitor who has shown the ability
to end fights by submission or spectacular knockout, Belcher (10-3) showed his warrior’s heart by jumping up to light heavyweight on short notice in May to submit Sean Salmon in less than a minute.
Now back at middleweight, Belcher looks to make it two in a row against Starnes (10-2-1), a well-rounded fighter from British Colombia who truly found himself when he traveled south to work with the renowned American Top Team earlier this year.
The results of the change in scenery were immediate as Starnes pounded out a three round decision win over Chris Leben at UFC 71 in May. Tonight, he hopes to extend his win streak in impressive fashion when he takes on fellow up and comer Belcher.

Michael Bisping Vs. Matt Hamill
Another fight on that card will be a grudge match between Matt Hamill and England's Michael Bisping.
Both were contestants on the third season of The Ultimate Fighter show and did not hide their dislike for one another.
"The guy has no respect for anybody," says Bisping. "He's an arrogant ego-maniac. He's a bully. He's just all about Matt Hamill. He's in the sport for the wrong reasons. I don't like the look on his face. You want me to carry on?"
The issues stemming between the two fighters began on the reality show when Bisping said he believed that Hamill was getting preferential treatment by trainer Tito Ortiz. Hamill, a three-time NCAA Division III national champion in amateur wrestling, is also deaf.
In sparring sessions, Hamill often went at it full-strength with his teammates rather than holding back a little, leaving them with extra bumps and bruises they didn't want. That did not sit well with Bisping, who said he believes that he was picked as the training partner for Hamill to help him become a champion.
Hamill won his first fight on the show but was unable to continue to the semifinals because of injuries. Meanwhile, Bisping went on to become The Ultimate Fighter 3 champion and earned a contract with the company.
Since then, Hamill has wanted to fight Bisping to settle things once and for all.
"He's been calling me out for a while," Bisping said. "I've seen him on Web sites saying that I got lucky, things like that. It's going to be nice to go out there and finally shut him up once and for all. I didn't really want to fight him at the start because I didn't really want to give him what he wants. But I'll knock him out if that's what he wants."
Oscar De La Hoya Vs Floyd Mayweather JR: Mayweather Takes the Belt
Saturday May 5th of this year provided us with a boxing rarity, when the sport’s current pound for pound dominar “Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather, locked horns with its most popular star and biggest money maker, 6-Division Champion Oscar De La Hoya, on HBO PPV. Mayweather moved up from welterweight to junior middleweight for this occasion, but while De La Hoya’s belt was on the line, that bejeweled leather strap is merely incidental to this fistianic tale. Truth be known, this contest is all about talent, egos and money.
Mayweather was unquestionably the betting favorite, and why shouldn’t he be? He is younger, faster and undefeated. De La Hoya has held more titles and faced by far the better opposition, but appeared vulnerable in 3 of his last 4 fights, getting stopped in one of those. In recent years, Oscar’s also spent more time out of the ring running “Golden Boy Promotions” than he has inside of it, while Pretty Boy has been somewhat more active in the former venue.
Mayweather won the bout in round 12 by split decision. Was it the fight to save boxing? We'll see...
UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell was most displeased with comments made during Tito Ortiz's recent e-publicity tour to combat some of the negative exposure caused by his portrayal on the Spike TV special Bad Blood, filmed to promote a fight against UFC president Dana White that never took place.
Liddell took specific issue that Ortiz refused to show for a fight that he had asked for in the first place.
As a proud Army veteran, Randy Couture has a strong understanding of what soldiers stationed halfway around the world go through on a regular basis.
As a concerned U.S. citizen, he worries about the men and women who return home injured, with their lives changed forever.
As a UFC champion and nationally known celebrity, he has a chance to do something about it.
Couture recently founded the Xtreme Couture GI Foundation, a non-profit charity that will raise money and awareness for troops wounded in action, as well as their families.
Liddell is featured on the cover of ESPN The Magazine
In one of many signs that the sport of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) has arrived as part of mainstream America, UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell is featured on the cover of ESPN The Magazine. The issue that is on newsstands now features both Liddell and his son, with the headline, "What's not to love about Chuck Liddell?"
The Business Wire preview of the story is, "As the toughest, most famous Ultimate Fighter, Chuck Liddell has transcended the sport and become a bona fide star. It turns out that the "scariest" man in the world's "scariest" sport is not that scary at all. Allison Glock reports." Liddell is known for his ability to take a punch, but his trademark strikes have dominated the sport in recent years.
It's no exaggeration to say Liddell is the most popular fighter in the world of mixed martial arts. To fans, he's the hardnosed, explosive and exciting champion who has been at the forefront of the MMA explosion in popularity over the past two years. To many in the MMA industry, Liddell is beloved for his tough work ethic and the fact he's still a down to earth guy. With out a doubt, the promoters of the UFC love Liddell's drawing ability as far as financial success goes. December's UFC 66 show remains the most successful show in the company's history. Chuck Liddell defeated Tito Ortiz via T.K.O. in one of the most exciting fights in 2006.
