Fosamax. There are several contraindications and precautions against taking Fosamax because it can cause acute inflammations of the gastrointestinal tract, renal impairment, hypocalcemia, clinically manifest osteomalacia, and patients that are under 18, pregnant, thinking of becoming pregnant, and breastfeeding should not take it. Side effects include skin rash, ulceration, and Stevens-Johnson syndrome, but these are rare. The interaction of milk, diet, and drug is particularly fascinating with this drug. Do not take NSAIDs with this drug because it can increase the risk of gastric ulcers. There is some controversy that this drug causes osteonecrosis of the jaw in certain cancer patients. There have been several federal suits against the manufacturer for this reason.
